Bond amounts are determined during an arraignment, at which point the defendant stands before a judge. Misdemeanor crimes have lower bond amounts, while felony crimes have higher amounts. It also depends on community involvement, work history, and if the court thinks there is a risk of the defendant either fleeing or harming someone.

Once the bail bond amount has been set, the bondsman generally charges a fee of 10 percent of the bond amount.
