What is collateral, and when is it needed?
Collateral is something of value — like a vehicle or property — pledged to back the bond in case the defendant doesn't show up for court. It's not required on every bond; whether it's needed depends on the bond amount and the circumstances. If collateral is required, it's immediately returned once the case is resolved and the bond is exonerated by the court.
